What Animals Can We Meet on Peucang Island?

Ujung Kulon National Park is the last home for the Javan Rhino. In order to protect the habitat of the Javan rhinoceros, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO designated Ujung Kulon National Park as a World Heritage Site in 1991. Many visitors to Ujung Kulon National Park hope to meet the Javan rhinoceros which currently only 70 left. If you are not able to stay and explore the woods for more than a week, it is better to just suppress that hope. Because it is very difficult to meet the Javan Rhino. The animal is solitary and does not like the presence of humans very much.

However, the Javan rhino is not the only animal that lives in Ujung Kulon National Park. We can meet a lot of animals in Peucang Island. SInce the big predators stay on the Ujung Kulon Peninsula, this island is a safe place for herbivores or small predators. In the coastal area of Peucang Island, visitors can easily find wild boars, deer, long-tailed monkeys, and monitor lizards.

All the animals that pass by on the beach are used to the presence of humans. Even though they are tame, visitors are strongly advised not to feed any animals they encounter. It’s a pity if the animal will be poisoned, contracted with human disease, and change its eating behavior. This means that they become addicted to the food that humans usually give them. An example of an animal whose behavior is currently starting to change is a monkey. Monkeys on Peucang Island sometimes steal human belongings to take their food. Monkeys will mainly target humans who previously provided them with food.

Peucang Island is also a peaceful haven for birds. Eagles, hornbills, king prawns, and peacocks which often appear at the most unexpected times. Bats and seagulls are also often seen flying in the sky. If you want to see big animals, try crossing to the Cidaon Grazing Ground located on the Ujung Kulon Peninsula. The distance is only 15 minutes by boat from Peucang Island. On this grazing ground, the Bulls graze every morning and evening. Visitors are allowed to see them from a distance so as not to disturb the peace of the bull’s life.
